Want to deliver presentations that will have your audience glued to you? Use these 10 tips to become a masterful presenter.
Start with a bang!
Instead of opening with a simple introduction, kickstart with a light joke or share a mind-blowing fact that will grab everyone's attention. When your audience is intrigued from the get-go, chances are they will stay engaged for longer.
Make bullet points
How often do we struggle to follow a presentation cluttered with text? Your slides should have a few bullet points and only serve to support what you're saying. This way your audience will be waiting to hear what you have to say, and not reading ahead of you.
Segue smoothly
Avoid the awkward "okay, next point" and "moving on" moments that make presentations feel like stations on a bus route. Smooth transitions are key. Find clever connections between your points to create a seamless journey that keeps your audience wanting more.
Make it interactive
If you truly want to keep your audience engaged, involve them with questions or practical activities. Presentations don't have to be a one-way street, after all the best way to learn is by doing.
Smile, it's infectious
Smiling will calm your nerves — a big plus when standing in front of a crowd — but it will also create a welcoming atmosphere for your listeners. Research shows that a genuine smile establishes a positive connection and increases your credibility.
Share a personal story
Do you want to be relatable? Share a personal anecdote or experience to capture both the imagination and hearts of your listeners. Not only will they be more likely to recall what you said, but they'll probably be able to relate to it in some way too.
Speak from your diaphragm
We're all familiar with the unpredictable shaky voice that sneaks up as we start presenting. That happens when we speak directly from our throats. It sounds weird, I know, but your confident, shake-free voice actually comes from speaking from deep inside your diaphragm.
Pace yourself
Have you ever listened to a speaker who made you feel like you were out of breath? That's usually the case when someone speeds through their presentation or swallows the ends of their words. Try to slow down your speech to a conversational speed.
Pause
Timing is everything. Give your audience room to breathe and process your words. A well-placed pause after a punchline or thought-provoking statement leaves room for everyone to digest what you've said, and sometimes to build suspense before you land your main point.
Summarize your set
When the curtains close, wrap everything up with a concise summary of the key takeaways. Research shows that people remember more when you repeat the most important information again at the end of your presentation.
Bonus: watch and learn
You might feel embarrassed to do this, but watching or listening to a recording of yourself presenting something will give you a chance to identify what you do well and where you could still improve.
